The Scottish Government is moving towards a Zero to Landfill plan for the country, which will see a maximum of 5% of waste sent to landfill by 2025.

The Government first published its plans in 2010, saying that it wanted waste in the country to be seen as a resource, and encouraging a variety of ways to improve recycling and reuse and to make it as easy as possible for Scottish residents to take part. Plans include:

  • Waste Prevention Programme for all waste types
  • Separate collections of materials
  • Supporting local authorities to identify and implement best practices
  • Target of 70% of all waste recycled by 2025
  • Improved information for individuals and businesses to encourage better waste management
The Scottish Government believes that its Zero to Landfill initiative will contribute to its climate change and renewable energy targets, whilst educating the population and creating jobs in the collection and recycling industries.
