DTR Medical went from zero recycling to Zero to Landfill and saved money by implementing a total
recycling policy.
Introducing the client
DTR Medical manufactures medical devices for specialist surgical markets. The business has two distinct functions: the manufacture of branded, single-use surgical instruments; and the provision of contract cleanroom manufacturing facilities for external pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers.
Understanding the issues
DTR was sending all its materials to landfill at a cost of approximately £110.00 per tonne. No materials were recycled or re-used and everything was collected in a single skip for a weekly collection. DTR wanted to show clients that it could recycle responsibly and ethically for the long term.
Implementing the plan
We put a three-phase plan into place for DTR. Firstly, we helped them to segregate all their cardboard waste, which is now collected weekly. Next, DTR began an office-wide recycling programme which significantly reduced the amount of material being collected in the skip, meaning that a collection was needed only once every four weeks. Finally, we encouraged DTR to segregate LDPE, or shrink wrap materials. After this phase, the skip was only emptied every six weeks. We then analysed the remaining materials in the skip and found that most could be recycled rather than sent to landfill. This material has been diverted from landfill and is being used as fuel to generate electricity which feeds back into the National Grid.
Seeing the results
DTR has saved over £14,000 by working with The Recycling Company, and has now achieved Zero to Landfill. The company’s employees are actively engaged in the recycling programme, helping to promote better corporate and social responsibility, and DTR is confident that it is compliant with all the relevant legislation and regulations.
